Btw, I meant to mention that the weighing by sample size is not correct because it would double the effect size, but because it is the generally recognized approach for meta-analysis in psychological literature. (Quoted from the Delgado-Romero and Howard paper.)

Agreed. I think the question is more in the interpretation of their results. Clearly the studies they used were of higher caliber. However, if they had weighed by sample size, the effect size would have doubled, giving effectively a replication of the other previous, less controlled, meta-anlyses. That’s why I’m still questioning what’s going on with the whole area. (Chances are, to clear this up fully, we’ll need collaborative research between proponents and skeptics on the ganzfeld like with

The book came out in 2000. The reliability of the Wiseman & Milton meta-analysis may be debatable but I think it is clearly more reliable than all of the other ganzfeld meta-analyses. A couple of them even included studies prior to the joint communique from Hyman and Honorton- so they are tainted.

(cont) was most likely a statistical artifact called Meehl’s crud factor where everything is related to everything else in some way or other.) Actually, one other thing I forgot to mention. I read the Milton paper again more recently. What’s interesting is despite the fact that she stated that the results became significant, it couldn’t be considered a true replication because the effect size hadn’t been replicated (again though, the weighing technique may have had something to do with that.)

What was the copyright date on that book? The modification Milton had done was in 1999. Also, if you look up a 2005 replication done by fellow skeptics Delgado-Romero and Howard, they criticize the meta-analysis of Milton & Wiseman in that it’s normally more appropriate to weigh studies in meta-analysis by sample size, rather than giving them all equal weight, which is what Milton & Wiseman did. (They also determined that the 32% success rate the 2004 meta-analysis and their replication obtained

However, Julie Milton added six more studies and the results became insignificant. The study is quoted in The Psychology of the Psychic by David Marks.

Btw though, in the event that others make the same mistake I did and assume that this is in fact a debunk on parapsychology and don’t read the comments, I am going to leave the video responses up so that they can get full context.

Ok. My bad. I finally get that this vid is intended to point out that science in general does have mistakes and is poking fun at the idea that science is infallible. In that light, my previous comments and video responses were unnecessary, I apologize, and actually give you vid a two thumbs up for pointing that out.

I take it then that this video is a satire poking fun at skeptical arguments? Cause if not, I think I’ve missed the entire joke or point of this vid.

(cont) Also, there is a slight problem. Richard Wiseman cowrote that paper with one Julie Milton, a fellow skeptic. Said paper conducted a meta-analysis of the ganzfeld experiments done to date and said it didn’t deviate from chance. However, two studies had not been taken into account. When Julie Milton redid the analysis with the two extra studies put in, it was actually determined that the results were statistically significant and a replication had been obtained. Small problem I can see right at the beginning of your video. You ask the question of is a parapsychologist a bullshit artist, and then proceed to do a video which starts off, “I am celebrated parapsychologist, Richard Wiseman…” By the definition you had presented just before that, all parapsychologists would have to have been counted as bullshit artists, skeptics like Wiseman included. Effectively, you contradicted yourself.
